Can someone please explain to me what the point of introducing identity cards when the terrorist attacks on 9/11 and in madrid still happened even though they have them their?. Am i missing the point because it doesnt matter if they've got an id in their wallet when they've got a nuclear bomb in their bag

It will make life a tad bit difficult for the rest of us. It is also intended to prevent people who are not entitled to services from claiming them. But if hospitals are duty bound to treat and schools are duty bound to teach and recouping the expenditure is left to another day then what hope of the aim being achieved.
There is no point at all, except the profit the Government would make, and greater pinning down of those who have been here long-term. It is too late for any such recording of the populace as if a person is here illegally he or she would hardly ask for an ID card. ID cards would be as successful as the anti-money laundering laws brought in for Banks and Building Societies are in catching criminals but in the meantime the Government can have a good snoop at "ordinary" citizens' affairs if it cares to. Now we have quietly passed amendments to the Criminal Justice Act which more than anything are designed to smother any protests about anything. I am not disagreeing about a possible terrorist threat but Goverernment uses this threat as a good excuse to keep tabs on the rest of the population. The recent case about alleged terrorists being freed, and the history of the one convicted, shows how useless the system is.
