adverts on AB
99 Answers
They may be necessary, though having 4 splashed on the page is too much, however i am quite disturbed by the fact that a site i recently looked up and purchased an item from now appears when i open out AB. does that mean that one is being targeted, and that your details are now known. Perhaps the ad is only privy to me, but i don't like this one bit.

Sorry Chuck...I have tried to do as you have suggested but can't establish that I have any 'subscriptions'. Anyway it doesn't really matter because my screen has been set to a point where, when I am replying in AB, I only have the OP and the Answer Box.( all distracting adverts being out of view.)

The instruction in the Daily Mail says;
//1. Go to the Google homepage and sign into your account. Use the dropdown menu under your name in the upper right-hand corner to access your settings. Click on 'account settings'//
Well, my name isn't in the upper right hand corner (I'm using XP) so where do I find 'acccount settings' to continue, please?

I too hate the ad's - but Ed has ten small children and three ex-partners to support, plus gambling debts ..(just guessing ed) You see, putting a site like this up costs money and the best way to recoup that and even make a little living is to allow advertising. Google ads simply places adverts that follow keywords on pages or accounts. It's not really 'personal' as such.
BUT as many have recommended, using google chrome and its adblocker lets you browse unhindered by low commerce.

"They may be necessary"
They are.
"though having 4 splashed on the page is too much"
It's the same number as there were before, it's just the middle one is in a different shape.
"i am quite disturbed by the fact that a site i recently looked up and purchased an item from now appears when i open out AB"
It's just usual re-targeting ads, nothing to worry about. It has been discussed here extensively, Ron kindly provided this link: http://www.theanswerb.../Question1101857.html
"does that mean that one is being targeted, and that your details are now known"
You're being targeted based on the website you've previously visited yes, but no, they don't have any of your details and neither do we (except those you've given of your own volition).
"i seem to remember a few weeks ago that ed gave us people who use an ad block a silly name .....par for course i guess"
I think I called you scabs? I could call you bogeys if you like, to keep the golfing references going?
"I don't really mind the adverts to be honest, but I do get annoyed by the ones that advertise something you've just bought from the shop you've just bought it from, what's the point of that?"
Yes, re-targeting can be a bit "dumb" - but sometimes it is excellent.
"does anyone else who's still seeing adverts get all those blasted owls...?!"
You should only get them in Motoring, more information here: http://www.theanswerb.../Question1101266.html
"I love the owls, it's the only one I like, so pretty."
Me too. I prefer the takeovers to the standard mix-n-match adverts.
I think that covers everything worth covering!
All the best,
Ed
