star ratings.

I realise people put a lot of effort into the answers they give to people, but are the star ratings really necessary. It seems to offend some people that some of the answers are not rated.

Folks are getting upset by the star ratings now??? oh for Heavens sake! how do these folks survive life? does the fact that Asda may not stock a particular type of baked beans cause these folks to have breakdowns?

They need one of those life thingys- as soon as I find out how much they are on Ebay i'll pass this info onto said users :-)

Hi Boo. Yes I seemed to have got my ratings a bit wrong according to some people in the news section about the whale. Personally I couldn't give a monkeys about rating or being rated. If I don't agree with what someone says then of course it is going to affect how many stars I give. It would be much easier if people were allowed to just answer or debate things without them. Phew that feels better. lol

Hi Maggie, Hi Boo! Well I am erratic with the star rating system, especially as I have now realised that i can rate my own answers on my own threads, how cool is that! I only give stars to reasonable answers, whether it is in agreement or not.

Part 1 : Evidently you do 'give a monkeys about being rated or rating' or else you wouldn't be making use of the rating system in the first place. As I said on your thread in the news section where you appear to have misquoted me and taken what I said completely out of context , it is of no consequence to me whether you rate me or not as this is not my purpose in answering. I intended to give my opinion , assuming that I would be entering into some semblance of a reasonable discussion but was shot down in flames like many others , for daring to deviate from the original question slightly and not completely echoing your sentiments. It is interesting that you mention here that you would be happy for people to debate , when quite clearly this is what appeared to annoy you on your news thread. I note that you have allowed a certain amount of leeway here as they are not closed answers and appear to be chatty (which to clarify , I do not have a problem with. A bit of consistency would be nice however) So in answer to your question and so as not to cause further offence to you by straying from your original question , only AB ED can decide if they are really necessary but in my opinion (If I am still entitled to have one) , they may not be necessary but prove useful in having the courtesy to thank people for taking the time to answer your post - regardless of whether or not they agree with everything you say.

Part 2 :People's opinions DO differ and that's what makes up the great fabric of life. It would be pretty boring if we all agreed with each other all the time. I feel that it is a slight exaggeration to suggest that offence was caused to fellow ABers by omitting stars on their answers. It was only an observation on certain people's parts that you had not rated certain answers and one ABer was intrigued by the fact that you had given three stars to everyone who agreed with you and not to others. I must have missed the part where someone actually claimed to be offended. Perhaps you could direct me to that answer.
