How to compile a crossword?

I'd be interested to know how compilers choose the words for their blank grid and what tools they use to search for the right words to go in their blanks.
If anyone can direct me to any useful info or explain how its done I'd be grateful.
I fancy a go at one myself but dont know how to begin!
I have read 3 or 4 books on how to solve cryptic crosswords but they dont fully explain the compilers art

Most, if not all, compilers keep a bank of useful words and clues which appeal to them - this is why you often see the same clue used in different puzzles, sometimes within days.
Michael Mepham developed a computer program for fitting words to squares.

In standard crosswords, grids are almost always filled by software. The program I use cost me about �80 - but I was compiling professionally at the time. There are other versions available (online? free?) but not as good (I understand).

I've personally never heard of a compiler (worth his salt!) keeping a bank of clues.

Several years ago, I was so appalled at the standard of crosswords in a local freebie called "PubScene", that I offered my services to provide a better quality product.

I ended up providing cryptic crosswords for close on 7 or 8 months. I used to construct thematic crosswords such as those that appear in "YOU" magazine (but better)! I used a crossword completer to maintain the quality iof the solutions right to the very end. I still have a pile of the magazines containing my attempts!

Clues were constructed so as to be solvable by the reasonably gifted punter out for a couple of drinks with his mates. In all that time, no one person ever won the prize twice!

There's a book called 'Ximenes on the Art of the Crossword' by D S Macnutt which is very revealing.
