I have found that living frugally (buying cheaper brands) not eating out/or takeaways, driving less have made a difference to our budget, I know it sounds boring but its a great feeling to not owe anyone anything!

Have you looked at http://www.gapyear.com/ or there are several other sites similar. Also you can get good advice from Connexions- it's not just for kids. You can also have a look on the Guardian website under their "Charities" jobs, and anything thats advertised in the back of the big issue. They are always looking for volunteers for people to work abroad, usually for charities. You could also go back to College and study something you love, which could lead to a more fulfilling job? If you did a TEFL course you could travel the world and teach english to keen Japanese students! Or any in fact! x
