Is it legal for a company (retail outlet) to put your name up on the staff notice board for not meeting a target at your workplace, this target in not a production target , but rather a target to show that you have caught people out trying to switch lables on items as they pass through your till. the shop is in scotland, and my partner has had to suffer this indignity twice in the past 5 months

Perhaps it would be better to show a whole amount rather than individuals results?

Try HO for advice or ACAS

there is no mention of this practice in the company handbook nor on my partners contract this arrangement just suddenly started 6 months ago without any consultation the girls were just told this is going to happen my girl only works 16 hrs a week yet she is castigated if she doesnt do as well as a full timer. they dont put everyone on the list just those who managment percieve as low performers my partner has worked there for several years and has never had any disciplinary action or complaint against her before , not only that she has witnessed other girls in tears as their workmates slagged them of due to the notice board comments, i dont feel this is right, any problems should be addressed in private not aired for general consumption
Go to businesslink.gov.uk & search for 'bullying and harassment'
Certainly doesn't appear to be very friendly
Is there a union rep where she works?
The link aboce or ACAS can help you, good luck
Am I right in thinking your partner has switched labels in order to buy goods at a cheaper rate?
Question Author
nope no union, and no she has not swithed labels she works on the checkout and is expected to catch people who do switch them and she has a minimum amount per week to catch and record if she does not reach this tally she is put on a name and shame list in her work
That's completely daft. How can the girls on the tills catch people swopping price labels, to reach some fictional target, when the majority of people wouldn't dream of swopping labels. At best it is totally unfair on the staff.
Maybe this is a Scottish thing but I've never heard of people switching labels before? How do you do that? Surely when the bar code is scanned it would give the game away? I must be too honest because I don't understand this at all!
Question Author
yes you are right thats how they are caught via the bar code but they also swop the different coloured stickers that denote whether stuff has 10, 20 or 50 percent off
Question Author
believe you me you would be suprised at some of the scams the girls have to try and deal with the shop is an an outlet that that sells designer gear at greatly reduced prices
Question Author
plus the company often send out mystery test shoppers to ensure the girls are up to scratch
Did you check the businesslink website? It sets out clearly what amounts to bullying of an employee. Mind you - setting targets for identifying label switching? Just how much 'label switching' is going on up there? It must be rife for them to set everyone a target. And how are you supposed to spot it? Do they give training? Surely the employees don't take it seriously? They should discuss it with each other & have a good laugh about it. The shop should set targets that relate to rational business practice. This sounds plain doss, y' ken.
