Definitely try 'The Firm' first, and go on from there.

Grisham writes really cleverly plotted novels with a law firm / legal basis - probably the best of that genre.

excellent i have read most of them, they only one i did not enjoy was the bleechers

I have enjoyed them- I started with Runaway Jury and thought it was fascinating, and that led me onto the others. After a while you get a feeling of 'deja vu' about the storylines but they are still enjoyable.
Although most of his books are about the legal system he has written the Bleechers one and I recall he wrote that one about families competing to have the best Christmas tree lights on houses, which was made into a TV programme-

I was bored stiff with The Broker, but I liked his other stuff.

I used to read his books then they started to get a bit of a samey feel to them, this is going back years though. If you like crime books I can highly recommend Michael Connolly.

A Time to Kill is a great film, so I would imagine the book is just as good, if not better, to try out, maggiebee :0)

Yep...the books usually are, Dr F..........Jaws by Peter Benchley, for example, has a whole subplot that has Matt Hooper ( Richard Dreyfuss's shark expert character ) having an affair with Chief Brody's wife ( Roy Scheider played Brody )....which made the tense final few chapters more exciting as there was no love lost between them and the ending was totally different, and not just 'Hollywood'

I will just add that the film, Jaws, also is just great, as is, and in my all time Top 20, probably in the last 10 too. Spielberg at his most creative and best. :0)

I did'nt myself, Dr F, but Mrs bear did and saw the film........i just watched the film which I thought was not bad, but apparently a longer cut of it exists and is hopeful that it will someday be released.

It was cut for length as the studio thought that it was long enough, and a 3 hour plus version would be too much to endure at its pace. Shame really.

Mrs bear did say the book is MUCH better and complete.

i have not seen the film , i did not think i would like the book after reading some reports but once i started i could not put it down.

Thoroughly enjoy John Grisham,
Trunk Music by Michael Connelly didn't appeal, maybe it's just the mood one has to be in for whichever genre appeals.

Stanley Tucci was creepy, believable and quite brilliant in that movie.
A brave and bold role to play considering the subject matter. The young girl actress, who's name I forget, was also excellent in her role.

If you like courtroom drama he's very good .
Read most of his books but A Painted House which isn't in the legal genre,which most of his books are , was really good .

Michael Connelly is really good .You need to start at the beginning with The Black Echo ,and read them in sequence otherwise you never know what Harry Bosch is all about .

Thanks everyone. Shane, thanks for letting me know the first Connolly book as I like reading in sequence. Did this with Ian Rankin's Rebus books and Quintin Jardine's Bob Skinner series. Another two authors you might enjoy.

I love John Grisham, I think his best book is his first one - A Time to Kill. Michael Connelly is great and also Jeffery Deaver.
