Bill Bryson
Don't know if you science folks have read it but for light reading from an author who is no expert but makes a great book go out and buy 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson. It is for the novice general scientist with a bit of everything thrown in starting with the Big Bang right through today! If you don't want to get clogged up with technical stuff and like a bit of humour thrown in, this is the book for you. To read an excerpt go here,

Cosmos by carl Sagan is also very good but its a little bit outdated now, but definitely worth a look. Theres another book on the life of feynman which is also a brilliant read, I cant remember the name of the author.
