I have read many books with the word gaol meaning jail, but when I put gaol down in a word puzzle it wouldn't accept it saying it was not in the dictionary why is this anyone know
▸ noun: a correctional institution used to detain persons who are in the lawful custody of the government (either accused persons awaiting trial or convicted persons serving a sentence)
▸ verb: lock up or confine, in or as in a jail
Gaol is the older spelling, still used these days but disappearing from use. I think it's more "dead" in the US than the UK, so if it were a word puzzle based on a US dictionary you might find it disallowed.
I don't know if anyone has the countdown app it's very addictive but the 30 seconds you get to make a word out of 9 letters flies and you just don't have time to think of many. the numbers round is even worse
