Anyone aware of any decent Surrealist art exhibitions coming up in the North.

Have to find one - Salvador Dali (preferred), Andre Breton, Man Ray, or etc etc -

Have agreed to take a friend to one before mid February (wants an education on Dali and knows nothing about art so it will be fun as Mr Dali is not for the fainthearted!). I cant get out of it as favour owed.

Thanks in advance..

I would suggest using the broadsheet's 'Arts' sections such as this:

I thought there was a Surrealist exhibition running in either Edinburgh or Glasgow until February, haven't found it from my two Google searches yet though.

Perhaps something like this with a 'promise' would suffice in the interim?

i suppose the real answer to this question is 'Tractor fish'
Nothing in York I'm afraid, our gallery is closed for refurbishment until 2015.

Zacs ... Santa IS coming in April! You were being Surreal with the tractor fish weren't you? Is it red -related to Massey Fergusson? Haven't slept since Monday and still awake!

Thanks Eccles..its a start. Sounds good. R. Magritte thats even better - love him. (I wonder why he had a black little dog but he had a white stuffed one on his bed). You dont happen to know do you?

All - If you have any odd gossip on any of the Surrealists /dada lot - would love to hear it. (I realise they are no longer with us)

There is an exhibition in Birmingham (permanent) but a sales house so I'll leave that one till last.
Thank you
Coke, not gossip but did you know surrealism started as a written art form with what they called 'automatic' writing where 'artists' would just write down the first thing that came to mind? Hence my tractor fish answer. If you ever get the chance to go to the Dali exhibition in Figueres, go! The building alone is worth the trip.
^^^^ top place, we went on the train from Barcelona and had a fabulous day.

In the meantime i know of no surrealist exhibitions in UK but check here to be sure.

Zacs.....thats so interesting thanks. People say things sometimes and its abit like that too - unconscious streamings (I'm sure James Joyce wrote some of his stuff like that). I've heard writers talk about trance like states where they cant stop and they are not thinking at all just writing.

I must go to Figueres.

Shoota.. that's funny and mad but exactly the kind of thing I like.

I bet its good in the snow.
I recognise the Hepworth sculptures which were at the Hepworth Gallery Wakefield for its opening. Very nice. Thanks.
Very handy for the M1 if you are driving.
Question Author
Its a good one because I think they are about to change the Hepworth exhibition soon so waiting to see what that will be & could kill two birds with one stone Shoota..!! Very good for networks as you say.

I think the Hepworth are up for some Museum award..they are tendering for a new catering provider so that will be a lovely contract for whoever gets it as they host alot of events aswell now. That wont come up very often either.
