The forthcoming book, says publisher Transworld, is the result of a new journey around Britain, and is out this autumn. I am intrigued, not least because its title, The Road to Little Dribbling, reminds me of one of my favourite bits from Notes From a Small Island – Bryson’s observations on English directions...

When 'Notes From A Small Island' came out I had it in my head it was some, hyped up, 'middle-class' thing that wouldn't be my cup of tea. (no idea why)
Of course when I did read it years later I loved it and had a lovely big 'back library' to get stuck into.
I haven't read that last one yet but I will.

Thanks janbee...I too am a fan ! I followed part of his journey around America, which he wrote about in "The Lost Continent" This was in 1991, only two years after he wrote the book and everything was exactly as he described it ! I stayed in the same Motels and ate in the same restaurants, and lots of them had photocopied the parts of the book where they featured and had them up on the wall !
I must say, though, that I found his last book " "One Summer" a bit hard going. It was OK if you really, really liked baseball, but it did drag a bit to be honest. Lets hope he is back to form with his new book.

Ladybirder. Another of my favourite travel writers, Jonathan Raban, was travelling around Britain at about the same time as Theroux. His book
"Coasting" is well worth the read. In fact, anything by Raban is worth reading.
I am an avid reader of travel books, as you may have observed ! I especially like books about America. A long held favourite of mine is
"Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon. Similar in many respects to "The Lost Continent"...enjoy !

Bill Bryson is always worth reading. I know him from his 'Malham wave' days and called in on his family in New England when I was there. He's a good bloke and a good writer. (For those interested, his eldest son was a member of the athletics club in which I coached and Bill used to hang around and chat whilst picking him up - so I got to know him.)
