Our "elected" MEPs have no power whatsoever to influence the secret decisions taken by the unelected eurocrats. Cameron has no influence either, as his recent negotiations on change prove. We can, and will, get rid of any politician who lies and fails to carry out the promises made to secure our votes. The tsars of the EUSSR pyramid scheme don't even have to...
3.9 million votes, Gromit, across how many constituencies? Fact - UKIP were not strong enough to deliver seats in a 1st past the post system, which has been our electoral base for x decades.
We may have has FPTP for decades but that does not mean it is democratic. It is heavily biased in favour of the Conservatives and Labour. If the General Election was a true endeavour to give the population of the country representation based on their vote, then UKIP should have had 75 MPs.
As it is, our system is rigged to keep the elite in power.
I know you've been in charge of AB's 'Doreen Larence' subsection of the News thread, but your previous missives have largely centred on asking her to 'get over' her son's murder...and that's easy to understand.
But this one's a bit trickier...what angle are you going with this time?
We have the democracy we have, gromit, which could be discussed in a separate thread.
However, in the space of the last week, I've heard Tasmin Sheik, Nicola Sturgeon and now St Doreen saying we should stay in the EU to prevent the tories carrying out their manifesto.
My point was not to for trumpet PR* but to illustrate the hypocrisy of a country that has such a broken form of democracy, lecturing others for being undemocratic.
* We voted on AV which is not PR and can often be worse than FPTP.
It is the job of the opposition parties to hold the Government to scrutiny, even if they have a majority and therefore a mandate to rule. Along with the second chamber (the undemocratic Lords) they act as a safety net to reign in some policies that may harm the country.
They are not doing a terribly good job judging by the number of duff polucies that have had to be U-turned in recent times.
Exactly, gromit, democratically turned over in the commons. I think the lords overstepped the mark when they over-ruled a bill recently. But it's certainly not, or shouldn't be, the place of unelected bureaucrats to dictate policy to Parliament.
