Many years ago I read a book by Kenneth Allsop, he was a regular on the BBC programme "Tonight". It was about how a gravel pit was brought back to life and became a place he often went to for bird watching. I wonder if anyone can remember the book and tell me its title

Thanks for that link, I had already read it but none of the titles ring a bell which was why I was hoping it might bring it to mind with someone out there but thanks again.

"Although written in the form of a novel, this book is based on the true story of the little ringed plover's successful attempts to breed in gravel pits to the west of London in the last years of World War II."

Thank you very much calibax that is the one that I was trying to remember, It is a good read.
I remember Kenneth Allsop as a TV personality, straight-faced, humourless and intellectual. By chance, I heard him on a BBC book programme reviewing Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie, a book he described as ‘a little gem’ (and so it is).
There's a first edition apparently going cheap (although, as it's an auction listing, it might not stay that way) on eBay:

What a beautiful title that is.
