I fiinished reading George Orwells book 1984, sorry if my other thread seems to have petered out. I didn't enjoy it, but i guess it wasn't there to be enjoyed.

I'm not sure what it was about, emmie.... but we all agree or disagree depending on what is said. An exchange of opinions, debate etc, is essential and healthy, imv.
That isn't the same as silencing somebody.

so you don't think we will end up like Smith, better surely to have been defiant and go the way of all men. The torture scenes were a bit much, especially when you know that goes on all over the world.

We are going the opposite way. Anything and everything goes- no matter whether it does harm to others or not. So, no.

but one thing is i can't actually put what i think about certain things in print, not on AB not anywhere. That;s censorship to a large extent.
so we aren't always going forward.

It depends how you see "going forward", I think, emmie. Without getting yourself in trouble, which kind of views would you like to say, which wouldn't be allowed on the Internet generally?

i would like my say on gays, same sex partners, and a whole lot more, but there's no point, having seen some of the derisory remarks when these subjects come up i try not to air my views, as they seem old fashioned in a modern world.

They may be- but that doesn't seem to have stopped anyone so far! People may disagree, of course, but, depending how you word it, most views and questions seem allowed. Disagreement isn't the same as censoring.

Hi Naomi, glad you popped in, yes i am beginning to come round to that way of thinking - i can't say what i really think about certain subjects because it would likely be blipped, erased off the site. Or perhaps if i sent in to the newspapers certain views that don't hold with the woke brigade i might find myself in hot water, with the police on my doorstep

Emmie, if you are referring to transgender... ? While I totally disagree with the Ed. And honestly, it's the most old-fashioned concept I have ever seen. Tbf, we have still been allowed to discuss it.
I agree- that targeting or ridiculing an individual is wrong, but we are able to chat.

Probably so, on a free site. We'll see if anything gets removed here. But, I have hope and belief, that people can basically say anything they want- providing it isn't to attack an individual on here.

Naomi, I also believe it is totally unacceptable for people like (who wrote Father Ted, Graham Lyneham?) Should be arrested for saying a woman is a woman.
However... we have always had these trends, and they will die out.

to me this is a discussion about a serious book.
I for one found it depressing as i said, and deeply disturbing, the fact is we are monitored 24/7, our phones give our movements,
what we buy is stored and used for further advertising, it does so on AB.

I don't get adverts on AB. But sometimes, I am a little annoyed that Netflix still can't work out what I like, while Prime can. As far as being monitored 24/7, I know I am more likely to be a victim, rather than a criminal. So, that doesn't bother me.

nope i don't think they will die out Pixie. What's next facial recognition, well that's already here, racial profiling, that's already here, positive discimination in the workplace, been around a long while now. I find that the more i look into the book the more i see around me.
