I fiinished reading George Orwells book 1984, sorry if my other thread seems to have petered out. I didn't enjoy it, but i guess it wasn't there to be enjoyed.
and i remember Pixie my b/f at the time in the 70's being called a
black bstard and worse. And being called names because i dated a black man by both sides.
and did that make you feel good emmie? probably not, but thankfully times have hanged. Just like some attitudes are changing towards gays (people who similarly to you an Mr em just love each other).
It makes me sad to see you seem to have the same attitudes to gays that people had towards you relationship despite the attitude being to your detriment then
// your ISP and your bank have access to huge amounts of personal information about you//
yeah but no but - - terrorists and dark web still flourish and so the info/data bit must be er wrong....and altho it was 20 y ago, the weapons of mass destruction were social constructs.
// Pixie at 14.39. You’ve not been paying attention.//
yup my attention wavered for one when "we" got onto 1984 - this thread is about 1984 innit? - and transgender and gay issues. Are you sure Orwell was writing about that in 1948 ? on the isle of Jura population 54
I'm one of the oldies on here. But I could never, ever, imagine having the attitudes that many my age seem exhibit. My parents didn't...even my Deep South born father, nor did my somewhat older sister and brother.
How much do we all really learn from our parents...yet many grow up thinking more freely than their elders. I know my generation did.
//How much do we all really learn from our parents.//
nature or nurture - twas ever thus. Darwen did a genetic analysis on cousin marriage before he er married his cousin. -pre Mendel.
he did . After concluding there was no inbreeding effect ( which is true because cousins only share less than 5% DNA ) [oops no 1/8 just looked it up]
AND
article in the Times this week about a journo new father reflecting on how his children accuse him of the same things he blamed his dad for - sulks mannerisms etc
That is ( since this is 1984) one of the events I recollect from 1984. Winston blames his mother for ofandoning him - which I think is meant to be a classical sweep by the secret police. The father has not ccome back and the other buys a soggy cardboard game which they play until Winston quarrels.....
but winston state he has inherited the anti gov behaviour from his parents ?
heading for a re-read clearly
fifties,we had a lot of DPs who were quite capable of telling us what a raid from the Russian or german occupiers was like in the East
i am not against anyone, its just that its in your face the whole time. if gays want to get married then that's their choice, just don't expect everyone to agree with it. My attitude to a lot of things has changed as i have aged, my views have become more right leaning for what its worth. i don't air my views to friends because i know it could well lead to arguments and who needs that.

WINSTON looked up from the news of victory and spooned some of the pink carcass known as Victory Stew into his mouth. " PP seems to have scored nul point in his posts last night"
Julia took a sip of Victory Gin and agreed from a broken and dirty glass. " Wait", she said " Nool pwang isnt Newspeak, it is not even English !"
They were both of good english stock and waited for the loudspeakers to blare news of another Victory scored.....
Hey as a spoof - satire not bad for a sunday on AB innit?
