.......in 2011, we Gary Moore fans woke up to the awful news that this brilliant guitarist had died in his sleep while on holiday in Spain. He was just 58 but had apparently developed a drinking problems over the last 2 years of his life. No doubt a factor in the heart attack he suffered.
Throughout the day, and intermittently, i will be posting some of my favourite Gary Moore music - from his solo career, his association with Thin Lizzy and his collaborations with other artists.
I know there are a few Gary Moore fans out there in AB land and i invite you to feel free to post your own favs. Bearing in mind that i may well duplicate those posts later in the day.

This was his signature tune and i have chosen this particular video (instead of the one with Phil Lynott) as it is a live version. Plenty of time for Phil to make an appearance - or two.

This was the song that first got me into Gary Moore. I know it isn't his best, but to a 16 year old Mozz, it ticked every box I wanted in a rock song.

Born in Belfast in 1952, Gary Moore moved to Dublin in 1968 where he later (rather reluctantly) joined the band Skid Row. This is one of their numbers from 1971 with a rather hirsute and almost inrecognisable 19 year old;

Thank you, mozz x I was watching ken's video, and hopefully chose a different video, as it was fairly horrendous:-). Over the Hills is brilliant as well.
My dad was a musician, and played with many you would have heard of. He taught me piano, classical guitar, electric and bass. And- a little drumming. I could live for 1000 years, and never get to Gary Moore's standards.

I began to learn to play the guitar in my teens, TTT, but i gave up after just a couple of months as i never had the patience.

Pixie, Phil Lynott actually fronted Skid Row when Gary joined and the two shared digs for a while. However, after a 'medical leave of absence' Phil was asked to leave by bassist 'Brush' Shiels who took over the vocals.
Things happen for a reason :-)

Time To Heel is taken from the 1973 album
'Grinding Stone'. Though it was produced under the guise of The Gary Moore Band, it was essentially the launch of his solo career.

I'm sure, Ken:-). I met Skid Row twice, once with a boyfriend who was a roadie first time, and then his band supported them. They were my absolute heroes at that age :-). And all, incredibly polite and charming. My very favourite, Rachel Bolan, I talked to for quite some time and he was just an absolute flirty gentleman :-) Will never forget that.

Excellent guitarist/musician. I too tried to learn to play the guitar but gave up having no talent for it. When I was a drummer in a band it did impress others when I picked up a guitar to show how it should be played.

As we are all aware, Phil Lynott formed Thin Lizzy after leaving Skid Row and when his lead guitarist, Eric Bell 'cracked up' on stage* and left the band, Phil turned to his friend Gary Moore to help finish their 1974 tour. He recorded just 3 songs with them, co-writing this brilliant number. The video is from 1978 but it is the only one i've found with Gary apparently playing the lead.

*In the middle of a New Year's Eve concert, Eric Bell threw his guitar into the air, pushed the amplifiers into the audience and stormed off stage - and also out of the band. He later cited 'ill health'.
