Since there have been so many 'what's your favourite....' and 'top ten....' questions in the music section recently, thought I'd try What's your favourite book of all time...? with reasons please - any comments on what the greatest book of all time is (if this differs from your fave) would be acceptable too!

"Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour" by R S Surtees. Brilliant characters, every bit as good as Dickens but a hell of a sight more enjoyable to read.

I enjoyed Little Big Man by Tom Berger, Papillion, Far from the Madding Crowd, Moby Dick....the first two coz they are great yarns and the last two coz they just say so much to me.

I agree with Cactus ' Of Mice and Men ' is a great book John Steinbeck describes the hard times of the depression so well and the book is so short if youre not a dedicated reader you can soon finish it , then if you have developed a taste for his work try ' The Grapes of Wrath ' for more mirth and hilarity Beverly Hillbilly style

William Gibson's Neuromancer - closely followed by the rest of his work.
Written over 15 years ago and come closer to non-fiction with every passing year - frighteningly prophetic and the grand-daddy of cyberpunk. A modern classic.

They have their exits by Airey Neave. An extraordinary tale of the only british officer to escape from colditz in WWII. Sadly despite all his escapades, he was blown up by the IRA in 1979 in his car below the house of commons - a despicable cowardly act against a great man.

i have many but the one thats ingrossed me badly was les miserables especialy with its key charecter of jon valjean. i ove the many intertwining stories.

Mine would be Wold by Paul Judges. Wold is a moving love story set in the unique environment of the Yorkshire Wolds. Two young people attempt to carve a life for themselves, despite their families, and the sometimes harsh environment. The tale is carefully honed into a series of snapshots of beautiful simplicity, sprinkled with searing humour and mysticism. This book is quite the opposite of novels thick as a loaf of bread - in its short, poetic span, so much is said, so much unsaid.
