Want to be alone

A couple of years back I read a book about an American who wanted to be as alone as he could get, and did his best to find a place where he could be on his own. He eventually died in Alaska in a somewhat miserable way.
Does anyone recall the name of this book, I am sure it was a none too thick paperback.
