Julia Margaret Cameron leads the way - there is a museum at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight - her old home, which is well worth a visit. She was the first person - male of female - who used the photographic image to convey real emotion. Most photographers at the time were competent chemists and merely producing a stable image was deemed skill enough. Her output over a very short time was truly prolific. Lee Miller is another unique lady of her time and her work spans an extraordinary range with extraordinary influences - as a model, as a student of Man Ray, as an American living in London during the blitz and as a war photographer on the front line with the American Army. |
