Depression.

He battled clinical depression all his life. It's a well known fact that many creative/artistic people suffer from depression. Comedians too.
For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.
He was a manic depressive and was rejected by a woman he loved. He clipped off part of his ear (I believe the right one as the bandaged self portrait was painted using a mirror thus showing it to be the left) he sent it to her. She wasn't impressed! He then shot himself in the orchard of the asylum where he was living.
