I read somewhere that it was a native american burial prayer although I have my doubts and I can't recall actually reading it in any of the books about native american history that I have read.

Widely said to have been written in 1932 by one Mary Frye of Baltimore, USA, about whom little is publicly known. http://www.donotstandatmygrave.com/article.pdf is a report on a search for the source, the author of which concludes that while Ms Frye was probably the originator, some other unknown writer or writers substantially polished her version, resulting in the improved version now most often used.
