I think Napoleans trained dogs killed him, so that he (Napolean) could wrest power from Major.
Major died peacefully in his sleep long before Napoleon came to power. The reason is because power corrupts, and the hierarchical nature of society in Animal Farms caused the pigs under Napoleon to entrench their power to their own advantage rather than working selflessly towards Major's ideal society. There was no equivalent of Mao in the fable.
Was it Snowball that Napolean set the dogs on then?
Yes, sort of... Snowball was hounded out by the dogs and managed to escape. The dogs also "executed" a number of the "traitors".
Must look it out and read it again.

its heavily based on the russian revolution so i suppose it wouldnt work if it all went to majors plan.

majors dream didnt work because the pigs took over, power corrupted them, they became dictators. and majors dream didnt have dictators.
