why do they always at the end of the programme say what books would you take after giving them a copy of the "bible" do they presume every body want this by default ?

It's one of the longest running shows on the radio. 50+ years ago, when it started, they probably thought everybody would want a copy of the bible and the complete works of Shakespeare to while away the time.

I think Sandy is correct - in the days when the BBC was seen as a shining example of the way to live, the notion that anyone was not a Christian would simply not occur to them.

This theory is born out by the voice of Roy Plumley, creator of DID - if a listed building could talk - this is how it would sound.

Not to younger AB'ers - if you don't remember the sound of Roy, listen to Trevor MacDonald, the effect is exactly the same.
