Latin Translations

A couple of Latin translations required please.

1. IN TRUTINA PONENTUR EADUM

2. INITIUM SAPIENTIAE TIMOR DOMINI

In the second one the A and E at the end of the second word are joined if that makes a difference.

No. 2 is definitely: "The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord." The ligature '� 'doesn't really affect things.

No.1 is an inscription on the Scottish Law Commission building.  I am no Latin scholar and therefore cannot translate it but the words are:

IN TRUTINA  = On balance

PONENTUR  = propose, set down

EADEM        = the same

I hope this helps.

I think No.1 would be more accurately translated as something along the lines of: "All are placed equally in the balance."

A very suitable inscription for a Law Commission building, representing, as it does, the same idea as blind Justice with her scales above the Old Bailey.

Cheers guys. The first one I got from the top of my Scottish exam certificate, so is the motto of the qualification authority. The second is the motto of the University of Aberdeen.
