The men can answer if they wish but ladies, how old were you? And how much did you wear? The practice is thousands of years old, and cross-cultural, but who are you doing it for ? A straw poll of my female family gets the unenlightening answer " I do it for me; I feel better".

I am 50 and don't wear any make-up. Any time that I have worn lip gloss I have managed to lick it off and mascara ends up making it look as if someone had slugged me.

I think that it is 25+ years since I wore any war paint.

I am off to throw Frankie de Tom Cat off my bed.

Night
The first, and last time I wore makeup was on New Years Eve, 1999, at a fancy dress party in a large house in Cornwall. Vicars and tarts was the theme and I thought it might be amusing to go as a tart.

It was also the first and last time I have worn a dress. Cavorting on Bodmin Moor, in a dress, at 02:30 on the morning of January 1st, when it was minus 3 was a mistake that I am unlikely to make again. Draughty doesn't even come near to explaining the full horror. Had it not been for the huge amount of alcohol consumed that night. frostbite might very well have set in.
14y when dreamy boy soldiers camped near our GGuide camp on IOWight. I loved Brendan but sadly his career came first and he left me....sob sob
8 or 9....my mum used to get me cute little girly make up products from avon as she bought hers. it was only coloured lip balm, cheek tint and nail polish designed specifically for children and i loved it! although i must say that i do not leave the house without slap on today as my skin is terrible and i have suitcases under my eyes, not bags!!!!
I was 8 and it was for a stage production.
wbm....lol! x
I was in a local drama group so I suppose I must have been about 8 or 9. Hated it and hated the effort involved having to scrape it off afterwards.
I believe you, Boaty, no, I do, honestly, lol
Mid teens when i used to use mum's mascara. It came in a small block with a little brush and after a while it would crack with age. I would have to dampen it to get any life out of it.

I wear a small amount of make up still as I look washed out without it.
never have done, now age 60 and no intention of starting. I have tried nail varnish a time or two but its so much faff. I was never keen to use makeup and my dear late DH hated it so I never did.
perfume, now that's a different matter, jewellery too!
Like Tambo - 14. Similar reasons.
I was 15, and my parents only let me wear lipstick as long as it was a natural skin colour and didnt show up too much!
Maydup - block mascara! I remember it well.

Looking back I don't think Mum used her mascara very often which is why it dried out. She probably kept a block for a special occasion but I would creep into her room and use it in secret. The little I managed to get from it would hardly have shown on my eyelashes!
1954 The London v Barts at the Old Deer Park....I was the leading majorette in a brass band to entertain before kick off. Lipstick, breasts, rouge etc but we were "jumped" by a group of Bart's morons and we had to run for our lives (virginity.)
13 or 14. My mother did and my best friend's mum was an Avon rep so there was always tons of stuff to try. I've never stopped. I would say 100& of the people who have made derogatory remarks to me about it over the years are other women.
^100%
14. Block mascara and Miners lipstick called Way Out Pink!
