Skin care products - is expensive always best?

I have always been quite good at giving my face a cleanse, tone and moisturise daily, however I really have no idea what products to buy. - usually I go for 'simple' or whats on offer! I have a friend who is a beauty therapist and will recommend expensive lines such as matis, dermaloglica etc but are these really any better than high st versions? The cost of these items are so expensive and I am on a bit of a budget. I am a little skeptical after watching programmes where they use 100 women to try 3 products, one is a placebo - think Gok Wan did age creams on his how to look good naked show recently....... Are there any skin care specialists out there that know the answer to this Q, are we just being ripped off with fancy names and packaging or are these posh products the best to buy?????!

use dove body wash on my face, cleanse with a basic facial wipe, and always use Simple Mosturiser, many friends are younger,use all the expensive products and have bad skin!!
