I'm having trouble dying my hair. I'm mixed race so my hair is a little different to some other peoples. And Im naturally a dark brown. Although I want to dye my hair light brown! Everytime I attempt to do this it just doesn't take. And I end up looking like the roots of my hair are light (not that much) and the rest of my hair is still dark but with a tint of colour... can someone please tell me what I need to do to be able to dye my hair lighter... I have been using home kits...

go to a proffessional hairdresser
I don't know a great deal about this but shouldn't you be using something that has a lightener so that you are really bleaching it a little ? I've used a lightener for years and now it serves to cover up any grey hairs as well :-))

Will the only way be to bleach my hair then? Just im bit hesitant as I know it breaks your hair

thanks for ur help! x
Dyieng is adding colour, & bleaching is taking it away, ie making it lighter.
Home bleaching - especially after trying various dyes - could possibly break your hair, or turn it an interesting shade of green or orange.
It's worth going to a hairdresser, perhaps to a hairdressing college as a model if you want to get a bargain price.
Good luck.
I would go to a professional who will know the best thing for your hairtype.

You don't have to use bleach to lighten your hair, I have been getting my hair highlighted for 10 years and i have never had bleach used on it as hairdressers have said this would be too harsh on my hair and may damage it.

I'm not sure of the name of the product they use, I'll ask next time I'm getting it done!
Definitely go and have it done professionally. Colouring is a professional skill and shouldn't be messed around with. Not only could you end up with a bad colour, but damage the hair too.

Most of the colourants in the shops are designed for Caucasian hair. Mixed race hair is dryer and more porous. Go to a decent Afro hair salon. I don't know where you live, but if you're in London, I can recommed a very good salon.
