Hi sqad would be grateful for your help.
Is Flucloxacillin the only antibiotic which will cure streptococcal infection caused by a mosquito bite?

No its not the only one and a little surprised that Flucloxacillin would be prescribed but I ain't no DR so I wont say any more. Maybe thee is a specific reason why that one has been prescribed.
JMR

As Ratter has said, there are many antibiotics effective against the Streptococcus, but I disagree with RATTER as I feel that Flucloxacillin is a good choice. Penicillin and penicillin derivatives are very effective against that organism.

If you really want a boring Sunday morning, Google Ketolides and Macrolides both groups of antibiotics effective against the streptococcus.

Bacteriology was never my strong point :-)

Thanks to both of you for your replies :o)
Think I'll skip the research Sqad - it would be way above me!
Sqad, to cut a long story short, I was bitten on the forearm a week past Friday and thought the medication had got on top of the infection. The last few days there's been a sac of fluid under the skin which has increased in size over the course of the day. Yesterday it disappeared and I was left with a sort of 'tidemark'. Rest of skin was normal coloured. This morning when I applied a little pressure to the wound site there was a burning sensation and the area feels lumpy underneath. Took 1000mg Flucoxacillin and the affected area became red. Does this imply there is still infection?

Do you mean that the "fluid" burst out or just disappeared?

This "tidemark" was it travelling up your forearm in a straightish line?
Question Author
The fluid disappeared. The 'tidemark' was a circle round the affected area about 2 ins in diameter. It had disappeared by this morning.
I didn't seek help till the day after the bite at which time half my forearm was badly affected by cellulitis and the infection was tracking past my elbow at an inch an hour. I'm left with a now mottled area some 2 inches by 3 inches around where the bite was. No tracking, no cellulitis.
JMR......no big deal.......it will ALL settle and, no, I don't think that there is any residual infection.

Sqad thankyou! Feel better already :o))))) I've to go see the doctor tomorrow so I'll continue taking 500mg Flucoxacillin 4 times a day till then.
My advice to anyone with with a serious condition is go straight to A & E. When I called NHS24 (Scotland's equivalent to NHSDirect) the first question I was asked was 'Are you conscious and breathing?' I just stopped myself in time from saying 'I am - you won't be shortly'. Even when I got to speak to the doctor I was told that I didn't need an appointment - an insect bite wasn't life threatening and I should go to the chemist and buy Piritin (sp?)
Thanks for your time Sqad. Kind regards, judy xx
Judy eh!.....that is my favourite name :-)

P.S I agree totally.....NHS Direct is a waste of time and money.
If one does need emergency treatment then A&E is the place.
