my husband has recently been prescribed Tramadol for a shoulder pain but it has no effect so far .Is it a strong pain killer and should it take effect immeadiately or do you have to get it into your system first?Any body else on this stuff ??

Tramadol is a mild opiate and certainly stronger than anything you can buy without prescription. I take it from time to time. Funnily enough it doesn't seem to work on all types of pain - it is absolutely useless for a headache IMHO.

Tramadol is a strong painkiller,but it had ghastly side effects for me when I took it......sleeplessness, hallucinations, nausea....the side effects didn't kick in for a couple of days, but I'm never ever going to take it again.

If its not working check with the pharmacist and see if you can take it with naproxen. It works pretty well for an over the counter drug. I've never had much luck with Tramadol myself, but I was thinking it was more for muscle relaxation.

Odd choice of drug for shoulder pain...................depends of course the reason for the shoulder pain. If it is musculo-skeletal in origin the one would have thought that a better painkiller would have been a NSAID e.g Ibuprofen, but of course only your GP would know the cause.

Funnily enough, strength isn't everything. I find Tramadol brilliant for some pains but absolutely useless for a hangover, yet co-codamol does the biz there. Do you concur, Sqad?
