Diazepam Alternative?

Which tranquilizers do Doctors usually prescribe as an alternative to Diazepam. Doctors are reluctant to prescribe Diazepam as they claim they're addictive, so are there other tranquilizers like Diazepam that are not addictive?

There are quite a few but it would depend on the specific problems of the patient.

It's usually prescribed for Anxiety & Alcohol withdrawl.

chlordiazepoxide...or more commonly known as librium! that's the most commonly used drug x

Diazepam (Valium) has an unfortunate reputation due to over prescribing, in terms of both dose and time, causing many people to become addicted in the 1960/1970s.

Used correctly as an occasional intervention (taken for a short period in moderate dose) it is an excellent tranquilizer and especially useful for reducing anxiety states.

also, if librium is being prescribed for detox, the patient should be monitored. it usually takes 7-10 days for a detox regime to finish. alternate anxiety drugs can then be prescribed...such as propranolol (a btea blocker), or trazodone, quetiapine (an antipsychotic, but also good in severe anxiety).

As Ratter says, Diazepam is also excellent as a muscle relaxant - I take it (very) occasionally when I get back spasms that normal pain relief won't touch.

For anxiety i use propranolol.

Wouldnt mind a wee diazepam for the nights i cant sleep!! X

No im not a Dr but I do administer drugs in the course of my work, I do not prescribe and im no expert.

hi tinks. diazepam is rubbish for sleep....it takes too long to work. have you tried zopiclone?

When my back went into spasm I was given Diazepam, then Tramadol. No, I'm not a doctor. Does that answer your question(s)?

RATTER15, How long have you been on Diazepam, just wondering as long term use is not advised? Also, If you take 5mg a day for example and one can keep it at that dosage, then addictiveness must not apply to everyone.

addiction is different to tolerance of drugs. taking a regular, but limited supply of diazepam would be effective in some conditions and everyone responds to meds differently. dr's are wary of prescribing addictive drugs (i.e. diazepam) to detox from alcohol (another addictive substance). it is considered good practice to use less addictive substances, such as librium or acamprosate, as a first choice for alcohol detox
