I Have Broken A Couple Of Ribs

Thought I would do some gardening - ha-ha! Only out there a couple of minutes when a recalcitrant weed made me fall and unfortunately I hit my rib cage on a low wall and have broken a couple of ribs. Anyone got any hints on how to cope? Doc has given me strong pain killers but I would like to only take them when I am desperate. In the meantime would appreciate any help. I know the first one is - stupid, what were you thinking of at your age, but I already know that one.

Thanks lady j and sqad. Doc said now for the bad news and I wondered what the devil she was going to tell me. Apparently it will get much worse before it gets better so I am not exactly looking forward to the next couple of weeks. It is very uncomfortable.

Oh Star, I do feel for you as I know how very painful it is, don't shun the painkillers if they help. Make all movements gentle and smooth (your body won't let you do otherwise really) and avoid anything strenuous till they heal. x

Thanks mamya and tambo. I shall not shun the painkillers altogether,but am thinking about only taking them when necessary as they contain codeine, which is addictive if you keep taking them and if there is one thing I dread it is becoming addicted to something. However, I shall not suffer!

Coughing hurts too marval. Must try to control it. Have you ever noticed when you know you shouldn't do something or try not to do it, it gets worse?

Sorry to hear of your accident starone, it's very painful even to breathe. Take the painkillers they'll build up a bit of pain relief. You'll have to learn now to float like a butterfly, smoothly does it. Hope you feel better soon.

Taken sensibly over a sort period, you will not become addicted - however watch for possible constipation , as that it how codeine based meds get me.

Feel so sorry for you Star, I once broke a little toe and I know how painful that was, couldn't wear any type of shoe, so to break ribs must be awfully painful. I can't take codeine based painkillers as they cause a really bad pain in my stomach.

As everyone says be gentle with yourself. Hope you heal quickly. xx

I was taken off cocodamol because it made me constipated mamya. I shall just have to put up with it for a while. First things first, and I want to get rid of this broken ribs thing first. I'll deal with the side effects afterwards. Bloomin' nuisance though. Just when you think things are going well some nastly little imp decides to let you know who is boss!

Are there any painkillers you can take which won't interfere with your meds?

Oh you poor thing! My dad did a similar thing, although beer was involved as he was on way home from the pub. H had his chest bandaged which he said seemed to help, and strong painkillers. Sending you a very gentle hug ((X))
