Am due to see a consultant soon about my hip pain, my doctors said I may need replacement hip or something called resurfacing op.
Anyone out there who has experience of either op\/
I`m fit/active not over weight & mid 60`s. Will this help in my recovery?
How long will this take? As I live on my own will I need someone with me for some days after?

i had both my hips replaced when i was 59 within 3 months ,must admit couldn't have managed on my own for first few weeks as i was on crutches and not allowed to bend so i needed help dressing and having my sexy surgical socks changed (had to keep them on 6 weeks )also because of crutches couldn't carry things eg cups of coffee ,meals and so forth .The pain i suffered before the op went straight away .
This explains Hip Re-surfacing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_resurfacing

A THR (Total Hip Replacement) usually takes 45-60 minutes operating time, depending on the type of hip replacement you have and the skill of the surgeon.
Your recovery time will indeed be shorter due to the factors you've mentioned.

Best of luck.
Pick your surgeon carefully and your unit.

Hip resurfacing? Do you live near Birmingham?

Fit, mid 60's. a Charnley Total Hip replacement (cemented and metal on vinyl) will last you 30 years (your hip will see you out)

In hospital for a week crutches 6 weeks....then off you go.

Yes if someone can stay with you for the 6 weeks would be helpful.
When my uncle had his hip replaced he was in less pain instantly.

Thanks for all your replies. Hate those horrible socks, not sure I can get someone to stay 6 weeks though. Might need to get my many friends to help!
Am under NHS which locally is a very good hospital.
Maybe worth considering having the op with an Epidural rather than Anesthetic.

I had a hip and knee done that way as did my husband have 2 knees and a hip. Recovery is far easier and we both feel helped us cope better sooner.

Good luck with it. Well worth a little inconvenience to be pain free.
