hi anyone out there have any tips for combating extreme tiredness and lack of energy. have been to the doctors many times over the past few years with the same problem. go to bed tired , wake up tired and have very little energy, feel sluggish & putting on weight ( probably age related ) though I am active, have a horse & dog so getting enough fresh air and exercise I work and have a family to look after too. Have had blood tests over the years which have proven inconclusive

Have you been tested for a B12 deficiency? I was like you tired all the time. I had been to the doctors in UK several times but nothing was found. We went to live in Canada and I was tested there and they found I had a B12 deficiency and I have been having B12 injections ever since. I feel better now but I know when my injection is due!

Thanks for that kathyan, I suspect I have been tested at some stage but probably worth asking again on my next visit to the Dr. Though i am made to feel a bit pathetic & up to now just offered anti depressants!! Have just ordered some sea kelp supplement tablets as supposed to help to boost energy.
Could it be an underactive thyroid? Get a blood test. Also I found Iron Tablets -- Ferrous Sulphate -- helped me when it was my 'time of the month' and I felt more tired than usual.
I would insist on being tested. When the Dr in Canada got the results back she was amazed. A normal reading is between 300-400 and can be as low as 165 or as high as 525 (I think that's right) Mine was 77! She said if it had gone a couple of points lower I would have been seriously ill!
You have had a battery of tests in the UK and all have been normal...so we can rule out anaemia, diabetes and an underactive thyroid.

The post of Kathyan is most interesting and i would certainly ask your GP for a serum B12 overvaluation as you can have a normal HB with a low B12.....unusual, but it can occur.
I'm just researching all of the above symptoms, plus a few others, for my sister. She has had her thyroid removed but and her meds are controlling her thyroxine levels.
They did find she had low calcium levels and she was out onto dispersible tabs but following surgery she cannot take them

Anyway, I digress, have you been tested for low calcium?

\\They did find she had low calcium levels and she was out onto dispersible tabs but following surgery she cannot take them\\\

I don't understand that sentence. If she has a low Ca+ following removal of her thyroid, which is usually temporary but may be permanent, why can't she take Ca+ by mouth?
Sqad, she has had gastric bypass surgery

Bad move on her part, but I believe the dosage she was taking was too much to stomach, certainly at this time, quite literally :(

Thanks everyone -certainly some things worth checking - I have no problem with thyroid , have good blood pressure (on the lowish side) & slow pulse I'm fairly laid back most of the time!. I have never needed iron as high red cell count. Don't take any meds & I have a fairly good low fat diet , though do wonder if i should investigate diet a little more as you are what you eat ?? I do have about three mercury fillings but am replacing them with white ones when I can.
If you are like your name, isn't it obvious why may be tired? :) :)

That was meant as a joke. Did you notice the smiley face? >> :) :)
My daughter has had the same symptoms and has been diagnosed with M.E.
What is M.E.?
Gosh it has a long technical name and I can't remember it - think it used to be named 'Yuppy Flu' - will try and find out the medical name.
Myalgic Encephalopathy
Thanks Sally. I just Googled and got chronic fatigue syndrome. Interesting...
