My backs's gone again. phoned the doc to ask advice whether to go and see a Chiropractor or Osteopath and was told that neither was any good for my condition.
He said he can prescribe me some painkillers but I said I've still got some left over from last time.

He then said he can refer me to the Physio at the local hospital but it'll take up to six weeks, I told him last time that happened by the time I got to see the Physio my back was okay and all they did was book me into a Pilates class.

Pretty pissed off now as every time my back goes it lasts about a week and nothing seems to get done about it

Any suggestions please?

Ask to be referred to the orthopaedic clinic at your local hospital, don't take no for an answer.
i feel for you it's agony when your back gives in, my eldest son has been off work for 4 days as his back went last week, he was screaming in agony just as it went. the doc gave him anti-inflamatories and told him he's trapped a nerve, he went back yesterday morning but only lasted an hour, had to come home as he just couldn't do the job. now he's taking a week off paid holiday to rest it. My daughter gave him some movelat gel , she has slight curvature of the spine and needs to use it often, apparently it does help my son alot. she gets it on prescription under the name salicylic 2%mucopol ysacco (I've got a tube here that I used a few months ago) . Not sure if it can be bought. deep heat and ibuleve gel didn;t touch my son's pain.

Thanks daffy and dot, if its still bad by Friday I'll go to the surgery and ask to see a different doc.
I had a sneezing fit earlier and it was like a firing squad!
Have you considered acupuncture?
It's easily accessible and provides immediate results.
board under the mattress, on the floor to sleep. good luck.
i've bought a memory foam 3" mattress topper and they are fabulous. I didn;t think they would help my back as they are soft, but the support in just the right places is fab.
Depends how much you trust your GP.
If I thought he/she was good with backs, I'd take their advice.
If I wasn't so sure, I'd cough up for a session with an osteopath. Preferrably one I'd had recommended to me.
Meanwhile, take the painkillers as prescribed, do not wait until the pain is so bad tou have to take them. Keep moving about as much as you can..but gently.
Good luck.

Will acupuncture work on 3 "bulging discs"?
this might help
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ofmH71LL2M
It certainly gave me relief from my 2 'bulgers'.....:o)

Sports-physios often can provide it. Give it a bash....you have nothing to lose. It really opened my eyes, as I had been quite sceptical before my first treatment.
did you try the pilates? It prevention really, it strengthens your core and the muscles that run down your spine and protects it.
sorry that bloke in the video is plain weird
Could you go privately for physio. Referral via our GP takes several weeks so I had to resort to going private, it was worth every penny
Question Author
Will give that a try jack, thanks, how much does it cost?

woof, I did the Pilates for 5 weeks, didn't really help much to be honest, agree with you on that video though lol

Rosetta, would a Physio be able to do anything regarding bulging discs?

First time I tried acupuncture it was bloody marvellous, the relief was almost instantaneous. A few years later back went again, different acupuncturist, no good at all.
I had 3 bulging discs Elvis and had a microdisectomy in May as one disc was pushing severely on a nerve. I have been so lucky that I have been dealt with so quickly because a lot of people I have spoken to with the same have had problems for anything up to 2 years before they were referred! From my first physio session in February he told me I was prob headed for surgery and I was nowhere near as bad then at that point. I have a fairly physical job and carried on until easter when the pain got so bad I had to take sick leave and was virtually bed bound popping pills that only just took the edge off.

Anyone who says 'oh I have that but am too scared to go thru with the surgery' believe me can't have it bad because the pain is so terrible you would do anything to just relieve it nevermind stop it. I was in tears nearly everday with the pain (& that was dosed up to the max)

Good luck Elvis, I hope you get it sorted.
sorry Elvis, dont know about bulging discs, that sounds like you need to get your GP to refer you to the Orthopaedic Consultant at the hospital asap. Hope all goes well, bad backs are awful, wherever you sit/lie you cant get comfortable or get rid of the pain

Hi Wingnut, just read your thread about your discs, when I went for my MRI scan the results were ......"Wear and tear on the lower spine, Degenerative disc prolapse and 3 discs bulging", that's when the doc referred me to the Physio but by the time I got to see them my back was ok and they enrolled me in the Pilates class.
I'm just wary of going to see someone off the cuff just incase they do more damage than good, if that makes sense?

My OH suffered spondylitis ankalosis that caused enlarged discs and constant pain. Lots of medications, physio, bella dona plasters gave short term relief only. Eventually (after 40y) the AS burnt out with his spine fusing and he was pain free.

Do you have AS ?
AS should be SA, spondylitis ankalosis
