When I get cramp I find stretching the muscle tends to help. Of course you have to wait for the intense pain to go. Many is the time I've just stuck there gripping my calf and asking the pain to subside.
Felt the same after a strenuous hill walk a while ago.. It wore off after a couple of days and since the day was most enjoyable it didn't matter. I reckon that salty snack might have helped as I sweated a lot.At 77, glad to suffer a bit for a good walk.
I think your problem was hydration walking so far and not drinking enough liquids. Rest and sufficient liquids should ease your discomfort.
Instead of tramping over mountains, lie on settee get wife to bring cans of beer while watching footie, legs never ache!!

zbearspirit: i drank about 3 litres of water that day, i thought i was fit, but wasn't.
when i searched ab, i was told to drink tonic water
Tonic water apparently.

P.S well done on the 7 hour walk! Was it for charity?

baby sham, 7hr walk wasnt for charity, i googled a walking club the other day, found one, but i didnt realise they were seasoned walkers!! the one man was 68 and flew up hills, where as i had to struggle. looks like i neeed more training. good experience though, lots of beautiful scenery, mountains, wildlife etc..
I have heard folk swear by tonic water. I'm surprised it holds enough quinine to have an effect, still if it works, it works.
Piggy, wowzers! Fair play to you! I did a walk a few weeks ago, nothing like 7 hours, and it nearly killed me!!

Well done you! :-) xx
I don't think you have cramp, I think you have stiff muscles. Next time, stretch your calf muscles when you finish the walk.
I agree with Puzzled, I think its stiff muscle as well. I did about 4 hours of walking today so I'll probably suffer a bit tomorrow.
That's not cramp, just muscle stiffness - it'll pass. In future, work up gradually to such a high level of exertion.

puzzled+canary, i thinnk your both right, it wasnt cramp, just a little stiffness. I went for a 45 min run this morning with a mate, and had no ill effects, in fact the stiffness has almost gone. Warming up/stretching, I always prepare myself b4 +after a run/walk, eg tons of stretching. build up to it!! i done a very similar walk 2 weeks previously, without any ill effects!!
