Is there a reason why one's own body gas releases do not smell obnoxious to yourself? Is it a similar reason to why you cannot tickle yourself?

The brain is more interested in changes in sensory stimuli than signals that have been at a steady level for a long time. If you live near a busy dual carriageway/motorway for long enough you will grow accusomed to tyre roar and engine noise and, next time you take a break at a quiet hotel in the countryside you will find that you can't get to sleep because the noise isn't there any more.
Likewise, people with body odour problems usually don't realise it and everyone else is too polite to say anything, for fear of causing offence.

From a very early age an organism smells and adapts itself to it's own smells.
A pig is not put off by the smell of it's environment because it has adapted to the smell since it was a piglet.
Some organism flourish in the smell of hydrogen sulphide.......the smell of rotting cabbage......all normal to the host but alien and offensive to the "outsider."
P.S I have made it all up......;-)
