There IS a difference on the surgery side, if you are on regular meds - the GP is able to write a scrip for say, 6 months, then the pharmacy dispenses to you every month (or whatever is necessary). Saves writing several repeats, the script gets changed if you have a medicines review at a GP visit. Also helps the pharmacy to know what's likely to be required in coming weeks so they can order it in - several times lately I've only been given a part-order because they are "out" of my medication.
