There was blood on my pillow this morning and my ear was covered in dried in blood. No pain at all.

However this ear is often very painful during the night , usually alleviated by lying on my other side.

I mentioned it the Doc a few years back and he said it was otitis externa and gave me drops. I've never bothered him since about it.

This is the first time it's bled. Any ideas anyone ?

If it were me I would go to see the doctor again. He can have a look into the ear and advise you.
I presume that you hadn't had any discharge from the ear before this incident.

If this is the case then it is Myringitis bullosa haemorrhagica.....no big deal, doesn't require treatment or a GP consultation.
Blood blisters of the ear drum.....it will settle.

Thank you both.

Sqad...there wasn't any discharge leading up to it.

I haven't had any further problems today so i'll just keep an eye on it.

Strange how most earaches / problems happen during the night.I had a 'burst' ear drum once (other ear), it took it's time to 'burst' and the pain was excruciating...there was lots of blood that night !

My husband asked me to keep the noise down as he was trying to sleep. How he's still alive i'll never know ;)
