Oh The Pain
9 Answers
Woke up last night with a terrible pain just below my rib cage. The whole area is firm to the touch and goes all the way from one side to almost the other.
I had it once before and managed to get an emergency GP slot. He thought it might be gall stones but a scan showed nothing.
It would have to come on today. I am organising a big family BBQ and could do without it.

I too has scans for this type of pain which showed nothing..thankfully.. in my case, the doc thought it might be a nasty attack of colic... had it several times since, and found that Gaviscon.. in a liquid form helped... I'm no medic.. this is just my experience.. hope you feel better soon ..and can your big day... Mrs C x
Hi everyone,
I thought I would update you on my pain and what it was.
After collapsing in the bathroom OH finally phoned 111 and the out of hours GP rang back (pretty quickly for a Sunday evening actually) and made an appointment with the out of hrs GP service at the local hospital QA for 8pm.
8.40pm I am on the surgical assessment unit (mostly waiting around in pain)
0.26am Dr arrives and orders bloods and an X-ray.
1.26am bloods take
1.46am X-ray
Confirmed there is unknown swelling in upper abdomen
2.20pm Monday sent for ct scan (4hrs of vile liquids to be drunk beforehand lol)
Can now confirm a small internal hernia. Surgery scheduled for Tue
2pm Tue it won't take long just push it back into place and stitch up the hernia with three small keyhole incisions.
However in their bid to tell you everything they also, say if there is any dead intestine or blockages they may have to resort to open surgery and recovery takes longer etc etc etc
5pm I come down having been opened up because their X-ray and ct scan that showed only a small hernia was in fact the whole of my small intestines completely knotted, twisted and blocked.
It has taken the rest of this week to recover and have been out of the hospital for less that 3 hrs
