Hi, i recently had a bacterial infection in four of my nail beds (hands) at the sme time - ouch! I know there is a fancy word for this. My granny used to call them whitlows but it's not that. Anyway, on two of the nails, the nail has stopped growing from the bottom. This means there is effectively asizeable hole at the bottom of both nails. Yuck. the holes or gaps are spreading and at some point i expect i will lose both nails. Will they strt to grow agin from the bottom do you think and when?

Bednobs that sounds 'not good' - an old fashioned remedy for any fingernail infection was sunlight soap (can you still get this?) and sugar - mix soaked scrapings of sunlight soap (or any pure soap) with the sugar to a paste and apply to affected areas -
However if it's a bacterial infection then aren't anitibiotics the answer coupled with a diet to support your system?

thanks, i had to have 2 weeks of antibiotics and it has now healed up, but now i am wondering if the nail will grow back
Hope it does BN but that will depend on the damage done to the nail bed I think - non medic answering by the way!!!!
I'm no expert but I think once the infected nail comes off the new ail should regrow.
Again no expert, but from experience losing a nail tends to result in a new one starting off afterwards. But I also know damage can cause a permanent defect from there onwards too. I guess you could ask your GP or simply wait & see.
I too think that they will grow back from the bottom...but it will take a long time.....months rather than weeks.
