Surgery Update
28 Answers
Well went to see my surgeon yesterday regarding my hernia, he was very surprised at my weightloss and is happy to proceed with the surgery although he now wants to do this as a day case in the local hospital as opposed to the big city hospital! I have to go back in 3 months for a final weigh in.
With a day case he said that he would not be able to put a mesh over the hole but instead just stitch it up? Is this not risky? Also I am assuming that I will still be knocked out for this and not just numbed?

I gather from your description that it is an umbilical hernia.....I may be wrong. Anyway mesh would strengthen the hernia, but there are problems with mesh repair that one doesn't see with non-mesh repairs e.g infection.
You may well be a difficult case as you have had previous abdominal surgery. If you you have laparoscopic repair it will ALWAYS be done under G.A (knocked out) but if it is done without mesh and without laparoscopy, it may be done under local.
I have made many assumptions here, so could you tell me what type of hernia it is.

Ah! that makes sense.
It is an umbilical hernia, you have had previous surgery, so mesh repair is out. Your surgeon will speak to the anaesthetist, but almost certainly you will have a general anaesthetic (knocked out) and this will not be done as a day case as you will almost certainly be kept in overnight.

Yeah!....you mean yes?
Islay is a big woman (or has been) she may or may not have breathing problems after the operation, she may well have breathing problems now. She may be operated on in the afternoon,I don't know and we know she has had previous abdominal surgery.
In other words after G.A she may recover like "an old person".
That's it.
