Hi one of my very nice friends went to see my friend who is really ill in hospital on Friday evening and brought a book and a card for him and left after half an hour phoned me to ask what time the visiting hours are as he was moved to another ward yesterday. She menionted that she has had d&v since last night after going out for a curry on friday night with her boyfriend, it started 24 hours after. However they both ate the same dish and he has had no symptoms. She says it cant be a hospital bug as she used the stuff in dispensers when she went into and left the ward, as I always do but does it offer much immunity from bugs, I know its better than not doing it. But surely its no guarentee. She said she will be feeling better tomorrow and he wants to go and see him as its his birthday tomorrow. I asked if her she was completely stupid you cant go anywhere near a hospital until after 48 hours of being symptom free. It could send people who are very ill nearer my God to thee and probably spread like the wildfire. I was a bit sharp with her I sent her a text saying sorry and she replied whatever but I think it is a hospital bug she picked up how long would it take to be ill if she had one as for the curry her boyfriend no symptoms. Anyway thank goodness she is not going to the hospital to visit until she has had 48 hours symptom free.

Gordie sorry, I am a bit confused by your post.....2 people eating the same thing and only one getting ill doesn't mean its not a bug. Catching it in or out of the hospital doesn't matter either. Incubation (from googling) seems to be 12 to 48 hours. Hand gel does reduce the chance of passing a bug around but it can also be spread by droplets in the air, especially in toilets (faecal oral).

I just thought if the dish was dodgy then both people would get ill.
Different people have different levels of resistance to different bugs
She could have picked it up anywhere. Hopefully she wasn't incubating when she visited your friend before, that's the last thing he needs. Glad she's seen sense, always best to keep away from sick people whatever you think the cause of the illness.
