Emergency Operation?

I need an operation - the surgeon has cleared me and put me on the 'list' but she stated she was putting me down as an 'emergency.
What exactly does that mean? Will I get any notice or will I just be told to turn up the following day?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

you must be ready to go at any time..pack a bag and expect the phone to ring... I have a friend that had a call at 6am and was in and operated on by lunch time... he had not had brekkie so was ok to go...
I think that your terminology is a bit wayward.
If you were an EMERGENCY you would have been admitted straight away... if you were classed as URGENT then of course you would be given notice.

Thank you murraymints.
Sqad that is the terminology used by the surgeon.
Usually told the day before but you might get two or three days notice. Keep a bag packed and warn people in advance. Especially if you have pets to care for. Make sure someone has a key to pick up stuff for you and keep an eye on the place. At least you won't have weeks of fretting over a date in advance.
More or less what I was going to say sqad!
as Sqad said..there are emergencies..and emergencies....
