Suicidal? The GP's response..?

Hi. Someone I know is suffering from depression. They are also unaware what day it is and believe the TV are making up football scores. The Dr was called out to this person, and, when asked how they felt, replied "suicidal. I feel my life is not worth living". The Dr's response? "Come in on Thursday for a thyroid test"! Is this correct practice? I understand they will want to eliminate chemical depression, but I find it hard to understand they simply left the house after this visit with someone who is in obvious need of help.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you are un happy with the doctor and feel your friend is suicidal , get in touch with the practice and ask for help , also you could contact the local mental health team who are on call 24 hours, they can asses them and they can make things happen . especially if they are saying they will self harm

failing that call an ambulance and hospitalize them that way , perhaps he has a history ?? that only the doctor knows about ?? hope this helps .... better to get help than not to and regret not actioning your thoughts .......

The doctor should of sectioned her there an then! he wud of had alot 2 answer for if she killed herself before her appointment at his practice.I wud report him anyway.

Not the only one - my sister-in-law had puerpral physcosis (I hope that's the right spelling!) after having a baby. She told her GP she was feeling suicidal - so he gave her a shed load of tablets which she promptly took as soon as she got home. Thankfully someone found her and she is now ok.

Calling an ambulance is not the answer I'm afraid. As a paramedic, we are not allowed to take people to hospital without their consent or against their will. If this person is truly desperately contemplating suicide you need to contact either the police ( who will get in contact with relevent social worker / CPN ) or like someone else suggested, call the mental health team who, if needed, will come and section your friend for her own safety.
