Waking up feeling sick
11 Answers
I often wake up in the morning feeling nauseous. I never actually throw up, but I feel sick for about an hour. I am efinitely not pregnant, and this has gone on for years. I used to think it was because I never used to eat breakfast, but have been for over a month, so I'm now wondering what causes it.

Fortunately dont feel sick but eat quite promptly. I know you are not pregnant so this might not work but I did read that often for people who do suffer pregnancy morning sickness having something like a tea biscuit before even getting out of bed often helps. perhaps worth a try for you?
don't worry scoobysoo, i used to feel ike that every morning too. sometimes i couldn't even manage a mouthful of toast.
try getting up a bit earlier and then eating breakfast after 30mins-1hour. try doing that for a couple of weeks.
for me it helped just getting in to a routine in the morning and forcing myself to eat breakfast even when i felt sick.

Yep, try some ginger biccies.
Alternatively if this has been going on for years have you mentioned it to your doctor? Could be some kind of reflux in your stomach area and the gases and stomach juices could be causing it. Try to sleep in a more elevated position, loads of pillows so that you are not lying flat.

Heartburn - thats the word I was waiting for. Go back to your doctor. Sounds to me like stomach acid. I had a Hiatus Hernia for many years and had to sleep elevated, almost sitting up. this eased the nausea and the heartburn. If it is a gastric reflux there are loads of things available that should help from simple things like Rennies through to Gaviscon (yuck), or tablets (called Losec I think).
But definitely speak to your doctor as it could be very easily managed.

Do you take any anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen? They can upset your stomach and make acid reflux worse.
Definitely worth speaking to your doctor, I'm on tablets which reduce the acid in my stomach as I had horrendous chest pains and pain between my shoulder blades and couldn't breathe properly, ended up hooked up to an ECG in casualty but was acid reflux caused by the painkillers I had for my back. Have a sensitive tummy anyway esp after an ulcer a few years ago.
Do you eat late at night? Or drink anything which could be settling it off?
Have you got fresh air in your room while you sleep?

hi i know you posted this question a long time ago, but it might help people if there still looking at it ;) yeah so back in march i was ill for about a week. after i got over that bug i started to feel ill every morning, it was a sort of acidic fiz deep down in my gut wich provented me from eating for maybe 1 hour after i get up, i knew it was going to go soon, but that didnt matter, getting into work then sitting at my desk made me feel even worse! anyway...yes so i went to see my doctorand he had this idea that my stomach is producing to much acid overnight, Gastritus is what he called the problem and that is the stomach producing to much acid, so he gave me this magic pill that goes by the name of "omeprazole capsule 20mg" wich soaks up that acid in maybe 10 minutes after taking! its a prescription drug, but if you tell your docter that you have a deep acidic fizz then maybe he'll giv you some of these pills and maybe ull be better :) good luck
