Hayfever!
12 Answers
Please I need suggestions fast! I am suffering really bad with hayfever this year, my nose is streaming and blocked up constantly and my eyes are sore and itchy. The problem is I have been taking the cheap supermarket brand antihistamine tablets for the best part of a year now constantly as I thought I was allergic to the cat! Now these are not working at all. I also use nasal spray and this is getting uneffective too. Is there anything else I could get and as I have tried all the cheaper tablets are more expensive branded ones the same such as Benedryl? Any advice would be welcome I can't cope like this much longer!

Out of all the over counter pills the only one thatseems to work for me is anything that contains loratidine / desloratidine...the others just don't do a hting.
However, if that doesn't work I think there is something called maxalon but that is available only on prescription as far as i know.

It's horrible isn't it? I hate the itchy eyes particularly and I never wear eye make-up as it just gets rubbed off!
The only one that works for me is Zirtek. I have tried supermarket own brands and Clarityn and they are useless but I think everyone is different so you need to try until you find one which suits you. Do you use beconase nasal spray - I find that useful sometimes and eye drops are soothing although they don't stop the itching.

Pop and see your GP as they can give some on prescription like Telfast.
Have a look at your surroundings as well, get rid of any dust or other things which may be irritiating you, use very gentle washing products for you and clothes.
You can get anti allergen products like duvets and pillows and special vacuums. Keep away from fluffy, woolly things or anything which produces bits.

Ionisers and air purifiers are great - the first makes the pollen 'drop' out of the atmosphere and to floor level while the second clears the pollen out of the air. With both you need to make sure you give your house a dusting regularly to pick up the pollen that collects as it drops - microfibre cloths are fab for this.
Also, I know it's horrible when the weather is lovely, but it's really worth shutting your windows before sunset so that all the pollen dropping down in the atmosphere doesn't waft into your home and give you a sleepless night. I pull my blinds down in the evening to keep my flat cool instead. Blocks out the lovely sun but keeps my flat pollen-free.
Finally, when my hayfever (and other allergies - to dust, cat hair etc - what fun!) is bad I fill up the sink with cool water and 'dunk' my face in it and give the inside of my nose a quick wash to get rid of the pollen. I also shower in the evening and wash my hair to get rid of any pollen that I've picked up during the day.
It might all seem like a hassle but it's helped me more than any antihistamines.

you could try the Qu-Chi acupressure band. i know it works because i invented it. i am an acupuncturist in leeds and did 4 years of clinical trials before launching this year. it is drug-free, no side effects and suitable for all ages.
