My husband used to scratch his legs until they bled, he tried loads of creams and tablets, then I heard that Aspartame was bad for you.
We checked all labels and he omitted it from his diet, within 48 hours he noticed a difference. Even now if he has some by mistake the itching starts again.
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, it does have an E number as well as other names, Google there is an American site which shows it can cause just about every illness known to man, but it does give facts and stories about people.
Try omitting it for 2-3 days if no different go to the doctors.

if your wife is of menopausal age, then itchy, crawly skin is one of the recognised symptoms. unfortunately, as it's coming from inside and not a rash on the outside, there's not an awful lot which can be done about it, but she may want to mention it to the doctor.
i too found the connection with aspartame very interesting. you don't half learn a lot here on the good old answerbank don't you?

Hi Bronners, having suffered same for many years and tried everything known to man I am now on my 4th bottle of Eucerin 10% Urea lotion - the relief is amazing AND my use of Betnovate is down to almost zero - (having used a 100g tube every 3 months prior to Eucerin). I can't say that Eucerin will work for long as my skin seems to get used to whatever I'm using after a while and then I need to try something else, but it's definately worth a try.NB I think there is lanolin inE45 - best avoided - other similar creams without lanolin are Diprobase and Doublebase
I was warned about Aspartame at a NHS meeting I attended.
It was very hard to find how my husband took Aspartame as it is found in diet type foods which we don't eat, we found it in tonic water that he drunk with Gin. He didn't drink that much each night but it must have built up.
On the American web-site it also said that Aspartame helps to keep weight on and people loose weight when they stop taking it.

I doubt if aspartame'd cause itching sandbach - it'd more likely to be other chemicals or additives that are in whatever your husband was eating or drinking, but aspartame is banned in some places. You find it in diet drinks, as it's 400 times sweeter than sugar, so obviously goes further and doesn't add the calories. However, it contains a cancer-inducing agent as a by-product, and is used in embalming fluid! Stay away from it.
Maybe this'll help - although it it doesn't give you the full facts.
