I have suffered from IBS for about a year now and go through really hard times with it, at the moment I am dealing with one of those times.
Mentally, I find it hard to cope, handle and accept when things are like this as all you can do is ride through it.
Although I am aware I have the syndrome (as diagnosed by doctor) I sometimes "ignore" it and start drinking coffee etc (trigger foods) as if I am doing it in despite of it - does any other IBS sufferer do this? And how do you handle the worst times which can get you so down?

I find that taking loperamide tablets to prevent diarrhoea at inappropriate times takes helps - I no longer have to worry about having to rush off to find a toilet.
Getting down or stressed about it will actually make it worse. I think that you would be surprised at the amount of people who suffer from IBS to varying degrees. Some times talking about things with others actually helps.
Best of luck.
