I have a running nose which is making me cough heavily. It worsens when I lie down. The pharmacist gave me Night Nurse, Contac, Nirolen and Sudafed, but none of these seems to be helping the symptoms. He said that they were decongestants, but I asked for something to dry up my nose. He advised fruit pastilles to suck on, initially! Is there a more suitable medication and what else can I do to relieve the symptoms, as I am short of sleep, please?
I was given a steroid nasal spray by my doc but that was not for the common cold like you seem to have. You could try taking a piriton tablet just incase the runny nose is being caused by an allergy or dust, and see if that helps. Have you also tried going for a walk outside? I find that will often dry your nose up- a dose of fresh air!
The pharmacist asked if I was taking any other medication, which I am not. I have only taken one medication at a time. I have been for a bracing walk, but find that the temperature changes make my nose run more. I've tried sleeping on my front, but the liquid seems to keep finding a way down my throat and my ribs ache with coughing.
I found Mucron helpful in the past. If the runny nose persists ... as in for a couple of weeks, go see the doc. I often get a sinus infection after a cold and wind up with a runny nose for ages. Last time I went to see the doc about it, he prescribed antibiotics for the post nasal drip and that fixed the problem - that time anyway.
