High blood pressure
4 Answers
Hi there I am 39 years old and for the first time in July was diagnosed with high blood pressure. My last check before that was February and as always is was 'perfect'. I was on the pill microgynon so that was stopped immediately and shortly after I was to go for blood tests, told all fine there. I have also at doctors recommendation had full eye test and all was fine there too. As suggested by doctor I bought a BP monitor just so I could be checking it at 'relaxed times' too but have been back and forward to the nurse every fortnight. I have had some not too bad readings but in general still very high. I am fit and healthy and not carrying any extra weight. I have a busy lifestyle but not a stressful one. Since July I have been feeling at various times of the day and night a strange sensation - kind of like having had too much coffee but I have not had a drop of coffee since this problem started. Although I don't feel I was ever bad for salt I have not been adding it to food and rarely eat anything processed. My quesiton is - I am to go back to the doctors today and I think if BP still high she has indicated that she will put me on medication. I am not sure yet if this would just be to try and lower it or something she would be putting me on for life but of course will ask. I am wondering though - should she be doing anything else to find out why a normally healthy person should all of a sudden have high BP -should I be asking for any further checks? many thanks

Mine....for what it is worth:
1) You have used a monitor and by your results, you have hypertension.
2) You will need tablets to lower your BP.
3) Yes you will almost certainly need to take them for the rest of your life.
4) At this stage, no further investigations are required.
